There is no easier way to dress up a cake than with a fun cake topper. It’s that extra little detail that can take a store bought cake (or even a super simple homemade one) to the next level.
You only need a few things to pull this baby off and most of the items you probably already have on hand. Plus, lucky for you guys, Peter Loves Jane created a gorgeous free printable to download!
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:
- Hot glue
- 2 wooden skewers ( I used these)
- This free printable floral cake topper download
- A cake (mine is a 6″ three layer cake)
Obviously, the first step is to print and cut out the printable file. (I printed mine on cardstock to make it sturdier).
I chose to keep mine as a simple rectangle, but you could cut a fun shape around the image, a scalloped edge, or create a colored backer too!
I am using simple wooden dowels, like the kind you’d use on the BBQ. Cut the length of the skewer to fit the size of your cake. You want to leave enough room at the bottom to ensure your topper will stay in place and not topple over.
Tip: Cut your skewers from the bottom so that you can’t see the rough edges on the dowel after the topper is inserted.
I used my glue gun and just ran a line of hot glue down the back edge of the topper. You can see that my glue gun has been around the block a few times. That guys gets a lot of action.
Press your skewer (clean side up) on the back of your topper. Repeat this on the other side and make sure that each side is the same distance from the edge and the top, otherwise it will look off center once finished.
Insert the topper into your cake, making sure it’s centered evenly.
Voila! Easy, fast, super simple.
I love a dressed up cake, and this little guy is ready to party!
